Friday morning, September 13th. Watching perfectly rational people make terrible decisions while superstitious people stumble into better outcomes, and realizing that maybe we've got the relationship between reason and results backwards.
The Rationality Delusion
Here's a thought that makes rationalists uncomfortable: superstition might be more practical than logic. Not because magic is real, but because superstition acknowledges something that pure rationality often ignores—we're making decisions with incomplete information in a world full of hidden connections and unintended consequences.
The rationalist sees someone avoiding ladders on Friday the 13th and feels superior. But what they miss is that this "irrational" person has developed a systematic approach to uncertainty that often produces better outcomes than confident logical analysis based on insufficient data.

Which approach produces better outcomes in practice? Often, it's the one that assumes you don't know enough to be making confident calculations.
The Complexity Advantage
Superstition also recognizes something that pure rationality struggles with: complex systems have hidden connections that logical analysis misses. The butterfly effect isn't just a physics concept—it's a daily reality where small actions can have disproportionate consequences through invisible networks of cause and effect.
Rational analysis tries to trace direct causal chains: if I do X, then Y will happen. But in complex systems, doing X might trigger Z through seventeen intermediate steps you didn't anticipate, involving people you've never met and systems you don't understand.
Superstitious thinking assumes these invisible connections exist everywhere. It treats every action as potentially consequential, every situation as potentially connected to everything else. This seems paranoid to the rationalist, but it's actually more accurate to how complex systems actually behave.
The person who "knocks on wood" after expressing confidence isn't being irrational—they're acknowledging that expressing confidence might somehow invoke the universe's tendency to prove confident people wrong through mechanisms they don't understand.
The Overconfidence Trap
Perhaps most dangerously, pure rationality breeds overconfidence. When you've done the analysis, run the numbers, and reached a logical conclusion, you feel like you understand the situation. This confidence leads to bigger bets, riskier decisions, and less caution about unintended consequences.
Superstitious thinking maintains healthy uncertainty even after analysis. It assumes there are always factors you haven't considered, connections you haven't mapped, possibilities you haven't imagined. This uncertainty leads to smaller bets, more careful decisions, and built-in margin for error.
Look at the major catastrophes of the past century—financial crashes, technological disasters, political upheavals. Most weren't caused by people failing to think logically. They were caused by people thinking so logically that they became convinced they understood complex systems better than they actually did.
The superstitious person's constant low-level wariness about unseen forces might look foolish, but it's psychologically harder to convince someone who already assumes mysterious dangers that there's no risk at all.
The Social Coordination Function
Superstition also serves functions that pure individualistic rationality misses. Shared superstitions create social coordination around caution, ritual, and collective attention to risk. When everyone agrees to be extra careful on Friday the 13th, accidents actually do decrease—not because of supernatural forces, but because of increased collective vigilance.
The rational person sees this and says "the correlation proves superstition is nonsense—being careful is what works, not the day itself." But this misses the point. The superstition is the social technology that coordinates the collective caution. Without the shared "irrational" belief, you don't get the collective behavior change.
Superstitions function as social early warning systems, ways for communities to coordinate around potential dangers without having to convince everyone of the specific rational argument for caution. Sometimes the most rational thing is to participate in seemingly irrational collective behaviors that produce rational outcomes.
The Humility Advantage
Most importantly, superstition embeds intellectual humility in a way that pure rationality often doesn't. Superstitious thinking assumes you don't understand everything, that there are forces and patterns beyond your comprehension, that the world is more mysterious and interconnected than your analysis reveals.
This humility leads to better decision-making not because the specific superstitions are true, but because the underlying attitude—"I don't know everything and should be careful about unintended consequences"—is accurate and useful.
The rationalist who mocks superstition often falls into the trap of assuming their rational analysis has captured all relevant factors. The superstitious person, already convinced the world is full of mysterious dangers, is more likely to build in safety margins and prepare for unexpected problems.
In domains where the cost of being wrong is high and the complexity of the system exceeds your analytical capacity, systematic superstition can outperform confident rationality.

Today, experiment with superstitious thinking as a decision-making tool. Not because you believe in supernatural forces, but because you want to experience what systematic caution and intellectual humility feel like.
